Certain conventional weapons are restricted in their use or prohibited by international treaties such as the Conventional Weapons Convention, the Mine Ban Treaty and the Convention on Cluster Munitions. This presentation will look at the humanitarian consequences of the use of these weapons, the reasons for their restriction or prohibition and the State obligations that flow from such treaties. It will also consider the involvement of European countries in negotiating and implementing these important humanitarian treaties.
Speaker: Leonard Blazeby, ICRC, Geneva
